Corey Warner, a seventh-grader at Sanford Middle School, was named one of three Shining Stars by Walt Disney World at the recent Dreamers and Doers awards.
Corey was recognized for his community service. He has volunteered 3,000 hours with Children's Home Society, participated in the "Can Child Abuse" project that collected 10,000 cans of food and coordinated a back-to-school backpack project, and served 120 hours as a volunteer at Sanford Middle.
Corey was one of 100 Disney Dreamers and Doers from Lake, Orange, Osceola, Polk and Seminole counties. Other Dreamers and Doers from Seminole included Elizabeth Shugart, Bentley Elementary; Jeremy Bianco, Casselberry Elementary; Brett Daiger, English Estates Elementary; Alexander Lowie, Goldsboro Elementary; Cullen Nally, Highlands Elementary; Emily Horne, Stenstrom Elementary; Holton Mills, Wekiva Elementary; Mariah Ruffin, Wicklow Elementary; Sarah Hansen, Woodlands Elementary; Brianna Tague, Indian Trails Middle; Audriana Asfoor, Milwee Middle; Miranda Vazquez, Rock Lake Middle; Corey Warner, Sanford Middle; Christopher Kolos, Crooms Academy; and Jewel Bernard, Lyman High.
Scholastic's top teachers
Dianne Burd was named the overall winner of the Morty Schaap Journalism Teachers of the Year Award by the Florida Scholastic Press Association during the organization's annual convention April 17-19 in Tampa.
The association is sponsored by the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications and comprises more than 300 student publications, online media teams and broadcast programs in the state.
The Morty Schaap Journalism Teacher of the Year recognizes outstanding advisers. Burd was nominated for her work with Lake Mary High's newspaper, The Rampage, and received $500.
GED winners
Six outstanding General Educational Development students won scholarships for Seminole Community College during the GED program graduation on April 29.
James Huff of Sanford won the $1,000 R.J. Schmidt and E.S. Douglas Scholarship. Huff, who earned a perfect score on the GED math test, plans to complete an associate's degree in business and eventually start a business.
Other winners were Dantavius Bradshaw of Sanford, who plans a film-industry career; Thomas Bower of Longwood, who plans to become an X-ray technician; Hannah Cross of Altamonte Springs, who had perfect scores in language arts and reading and is interested in fire science, marine biology and teaching; William O'Nale of Altamonte Springs, who aspires to be a psychologist; and Chantel Romaldo, a single mother from Chuluota who plans to begin classes in August to train as an emergency medical technician, then move on to an associate's degree in fire science.
Recipients were awarded a total of $4,750 from the SCC Foundation.
SCC scholarship winner
Rodina Smith, a senior from Lake Howell High, won a Seminole Community College scholarship during SCC's annual High School Math Contest on April 12.
Rodina, who had the highest score on a test covering all topics in math, got a scholarship that will pay tuition for 60 credit hours at SCC.
The overall team award went to Seminole High.
Book sale
Scholastic Book Fairs and local companies are putting on book fairs to raise money for the Big Red School Bus.
To ensure the bus will keep running during the summer to bring books to children, Scholastic will be at company sites selling children's books that are award winners, classics and new releases, interactive software and current best-sellers.
Book sales will be offered from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at AAA Headquarters, 1000 AAA Drive, Heathrow; from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 5 and 6 at Lockheed Martin, 12506 Lake Underhill Drive, Orlando; and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 20 at SunGard, 1000 Business Center Drive, Lake Mary.

Ice cream social
The Link Crew Coordinating Team will have an ice cream social for all incoming Lake Brantley High ninth-graders and their parents from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in the school courtyard, 991 Sand Lake Road, Altamonte Springs.
